One of the other questions I get asked is what surface I work on. As I paint with an iron, I always paint on card rather than canvas or board. I don't apply gesso beforehand. You can get card specifically designed for encaustic and I use this the most. I have experimented with other surfaces some which have worked and some not so much! Carton board, which is what they use to make cake boxes, is similar to encaustic card in that the wax lays on top. It comes in large sheets and is thicker than encaustic card. This makes it great for larger pieces as it doesn't warp. I will share more of what I have experimented with in the coming weeks.
